The Best of Slovenia Journey OverviewAstonishingly diverse Slovenia is a wonderful country to discover by rail – this self-guided journey reveals some of its most beautiful corners.
- self-guided, cultural journey by train
- enjoy beautiful and dramatic scenery
- visit iconic Lake Bled and lively Ljubljana
- take the slow train through the historic Bohinj Tunnel
- wine-tasting and lunch by train excursion included
Cosseted on all sides by its bigger and better-known neighbours, Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Italy, Slovenia's small but perfectly formed landscapes lie hidden in full view, their beauty and drama matched only by their astonishing diversity. This relaxing journey by train showcases the very best of that contrast, spanning Alpine, urban and Mediterranean landscapes. Beginning amid the iridescent peaks of the Julian Alps, in the Triglav National Park, you visit the iconic glacial lakes of Bled and Bohinj, and take a day trip by rail to Slovenia's 'hidden Tuscany', Goriška Brda, to enjoy lunch and a wine-tasting in the hills above Italy.
Travelling onwards, you journey south by rail to the charismatic capital, Ljubljana, with its friendly vibe and buzzing riverside restaurant scene. Another southbound train then transports you to the glittering Gulf of Venice – home to glorious sunsets and pocket-sized Piran. This pretty little town is the ideal place to conclude a journey that has revealed some of Slovenia’s most beautiful and diverse landscapes.
