You might not have heard of the Aveiro region of northern Portugal, but therein lies much of its charm.

Lying quietly between the cities of Coimbra and Porto, it has a proud maritime heritage, and a landscape – characterised by shallow lagoons, salt flats, lakes and traffic-free cycleways – that is a joy to discover on two wheels. Even the name (from the Roman aviarium – 'place of birds’) hints at the wildlife-spotting opportunities on offer, and the legacy of a nautical past – from seaweed harvesting in colourful wooden boats, to candy-striped former fishermen’s homes and tales of salt-cod-seeking derring-do across the Atlantic – makes this a compelling area to visit.
