Provence Photography Tour

The fabulous gold and purple landscape of Provence has inspired artists, writers and poets for over a century. The saturated colour of the lavender in full bloom takes one’s breath away and it is impossible for a photographer not to be motivated by this wonderful sight.

This photography tour of Provence will be full of many different kinds of photogenic delights. Above the fields, atop the hills, sit villages of golden stone, such as Gordes and Roussillon, their narrow streets, with brightly painted shutters and doors, provide countless opportunities for architectural studies. The surrounding limestone hills hide fabulous gorges and afford magnificent views

The surrounding limestone hills hide fabulous gorges and afford magnificent views of the Pre Alps, vineyards and, if we are lucky, glowing vistas of tournesols – the majestic sunflowers which so inspired Van Gogh – in the patchwork fields of the valley floor.

This tour is based in two centres so that we get the most out of our time in Provence. Our first three nights will be spent in an extremely comfortable hotel in Dignes-les Bains, a delightful spa town in the Pre Alps and the best base for the lavender fields.

Our tour is scheduled to coincide with the amazing blooming of the lavender crop across the entire Valensole Plateau. Here, lavender fields stretch from horizon to horizon, punctuated only by ancient lone olive trees. How photogenic is that! Also nearby is the spectacular Grand Canyon du Verdon and idyllic Castellane with its dizzingly situated church.

The last four nights will be spent in Gordes – just a short drive from the best dawn location in the entire region. The charming village of Rousillon sits perched on the edge of spectacular ochre cliffs that glow in the first light of dawn. We will venture out from Gordes to explore the other charming villages and lovely landscape of the Luberon, places such as Bonnieux and nearby Lacoste, site of an imposing chateau, ancestral home of the notorious Marquis de Sade. Another highlight is the nearby, stunning medieval Abbaye de Senanque, hidden in a secluded valley and surrounded by fields of lavender.

This week is ideal for photographers of all levels. Evenings will no doubt be filled with lively conversation and the opportunity to make new friends over dinner and, of course, a bottle of the delicious local wine.

This is part of our Luxury Edition tour which means that places are limited to six and the hotels are of a higher standard.
