Colorado photography tour by Light & Land Ltd

Colorado in Fall

The Rocky Mountains are among the most spectacular mountain ranges on the planet. In the state of Colorado they are rivalled only by the Canadian Rockies in terms of beauty and sheer size. We will explore valleys, lakes, rivers and summits surrounded by one of the great colour displays in nature, aspen trees in the fall. This epic landscape is transformed as mountains glow under the changing foliage at different altitudes. The summits may well be dusted with the first snows, foretelling winter. It is no surprise that this is a playground of many of the worlds greatest landscape photographers.

This epic landscape is transformed as mountains glow under the changing foliage at different altitudes. The summits may well be dusted with the first snows, foretelling winter. Our journey begins in the highly exclusive city of Aspen. Famed for its skiing in winter, Aspen is possibly even more beautiful in fall. The Rocky Mountains may be snow capped and beneath them stands of woodland can reach as far as the eye can see. From our base in Snowmass we will explore the Aspen region including the area around Maroon Bells and the miles of pristine groves along Maroon Creek Road. There are several mountain passes on this tour, and conditions allowing we will cross the Independence Pass which take us over 12,000 feet in elevation. This elevation variation ensures we can position ourselves within the fall colour, for no two autumns are the same here.

From Aspen we travel through the spectacular McClure to the fabulous Kebler Pass, and the historic and charming town of Crested Butte, our base for two nights. The Kebler holds a lifetime of photographic opportunities, so the one and a bit days we will have exploring will never be enough. But enough to taste its wonders.

The drive from Crested Butte to Telluride takes us into the San Juan range of the Rockies. Quite remote now from the influence of Denver this is our furthest out point of the tour. The mountain ridges here can be accessed by some challenging roads, and the scenery matches anything else we have yet seen. Telluride itself is a unique place with a beautiful main street in the pioneer style. Its new-found prosperity hasn’t spoilt it.

The next three nights are in the junction village of Ridgway. A place with a certain alternative lifestyle feel to it, Ridgway is surrounded on all sides by immense mountains and roads that lead into their secluded valleys and plateaux, including iconic landscapes such as Dallas Divide, Red Mountain and the simply amazing Cimarron Ridge. During these dates in the fall the peaks are often snow covered and occasionally we may have snow lower down the mountains as well. This fusion of mountain splendour, along with more intimate natural phenomena in the forest, old homesteads and abandoned agricultural scenes from a by-gone age provide a feast of photographic opportunities.

Our long journey back to Denver is broken by a night in Breckenridge, a playground for skiing celebrities, but for us a welcome break in a beautiful hotel before our flights home.

The experience of Colorado in recent years has made this tour one of the photographic highlights of a lifetime, including for the three leaders. For those who love mountains, this about as good as it gets.

Places are limited due to 4x4 vehicles to get us into locations off the beaten track in the wild back country. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
