Great destinations, but overall organisation by Journey/Responsible Travel was poor causing lack of co-ordination between local tour providers

We booked a group tour to South America (Rio, Iguazu, Asuncion, La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Puno, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Lima). Local guides were generally good and the tours were mainly well run with good transportation. Hotels were generally good in reasonable locations.

We paid our deposit in Feb and were later assured even if the trip didn't fill up beyond the 3 people booked at that point, then it would still go ahead with a guide. After we paid full balance in May, unknown person #3 dropped out and Journey cancelled the group tour and offered a private tour for 2 instead. Took quite a bit of time and emails to get the full itinerary with included trips reinstated. Lack of full time guide was big disadvantage for us as local operators only knew their part of our itinerary. Most weren't interested in checking our onward arrangements. We didn't get picked up by the guide at a bus station in Paraguay and this was stressful to hang around. Another operator changed our hotel but didn't notify Journey about this. We relied on hotel receptionists to check with local companies as we didn't speak Spanish.

Journey Latin America responded to this review on 21 Sep 2018:

We're pleased you had a nice time in Latin America though disappointed the original tour was cancelled and for the confusion at the booking stage of your trip. All our group tours run with a minimum of 4 people which was referred to in our proposal documentation and emails. However, we can arrange tailor-made tours in the care of our trusted local representatives and English speaking guides on the rare occasions the required minimum numbers are not reached, as was the case here. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

As our local representatives are specialists in each country, they may not always have recourse to onward arrangements in neighbouring countries, though a full briefing is always provided in each new destination, local contact details provided and we're always available by email or phone should you have had any queries.

I was also sorry you experienced a delay in Paraguay and that a burst water pipe meant you were moved hotel at short notice. We, and our local representatives, were aware and ensured you were upgraded on the ground though we shall of course try to minimise such occurrences in the future and will take onboard all of your feedback to improve. On a more positive note, we are pleased you were happy with the destinations, tours, guides, transportation and hotels included on your itinerary.

An incredible Peruvian family holiday

We have just had the most tremendous holiday in Peru. Highly recommend the Inca Trail - arriving in Machu Picchu having walked and camped was awesome. We loved the challenge. Arequippa is stunning, Cusco a must, Colca lodge and Condors extraordinary. Best hotel for us was El Tambo del Inka. Peruvian people are lovely, their food simply delicious and their history fascinating. Peru just kept impressing and delighting us. We cannot recommend this holiday more highly. It worked for us and we can't wait to return.

A South American dream come true

Visiting South America was a long held dream of mine, fuelled in no small measure by the fact that my sons had both been there and spoken about the continent in raptures. My tour did not disappoint. From the hot, wet and humid Amazon jungle to the views over Rio, from the mighty power of Iguazu Falls to the European like boulevards of Buenos Aires, from the colonial charms of Sucre to the bustle of La Paz, from the friendly bars and restaurants ...

Happy, happy memories.

The service I received from Journey Latin America was outstanding from my first tentative enquiry to saying farewell to our tour guide after a truly memorable tour.

Rating for tour operator:

Very knowledgeable with good advice on viable options. Flexible in allowing us to build own independent section into itinerary. Their selection of reliable local agents certainly took the strain out of airport transfers. We omitted most of the typical excursions as we prefer to do it ourselves and not feel rushed and JLA were happy to accommodate our preferences.

The optional choices on offer gave everyone a good choice depending on their level of fitness and wishes - rafting, climbing volcanoes, glacier walking. The level of knowledge of the local guides was excellent and their passion shown through. The standard of hotels was good - all had comfy beds and good showers! We spent most of our money on food and wine - Patagonia has the best lamb, beef, seafood and fish. All washed down with Pisco Sours and wine.

Rating for tour operator:

Journey Latin America were easy and helpful to work with when planning our holiday. Sadly, we had to cancel our original booking but when we were ready to re book we gave them only 5 weeks notice. They worked very quickly and efficiently to ensure we could get on the last trip of the season - we couldn't have asked for more.
