The Essence of Tuscany Walk Overview
This is classic Tuscany, south of Siena, where rolling hills of vineyards and olive groves are pierced with rows of elegant cypress trees.
- self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
- classic landscapes and characterful hotels
- superlative wines and hearty Tuscan cooking
- the quiet side of Tuscany
Cypresses, olive groves, honey-coloured stone farmhouses, fields of sunflowers – the undulating landscapes south of Siena hold a special allure. Indeed, this is the quiet side of Tuscany, a timeless region of great natural beauty and wide-open spaces, and it is a joy to walk amid these tranquil landscapes. Beginning in the Crete Senesi, our walk leads through archetypal Tuscan landscapes and the low ridges of pale clay that characterise the Crete, with stays at characterful rural hotels.
Your destination, which you reach via the beautiful Val d'Orcia, is the Renaissance city of Pienza, the birthplace of Pope Pius II, who dreamed of transforming it into an ideal city. His efforts may be admired in the precious architectural scenario designed by Bernardo Rossellino from 1459 to 1462. The main square, the cathedral (and its museum) and the Palazzo Piccolomini appear as if unaffected by time.
