With your fellow solo-group travellers, explore the most westerly of the three great lakes in the Italian Lake District, Lake Maggiore is 40 miles long, mostly three miles wide and with a coastline of over 100 miles. Split over two countries it occupies the region of Piedmont and Lombardy in Italy and Switzerland’s Ticino Canton to the north. The lake is noted for its picturesque surroundings of greenery-covered mountains. The palm-lined shore with quaint villages around the lake is known as the playground for Italy’s aristocracy and celebrities; many of Lake Maggiore’s islands are owned by wealthy Italian families giving the area an upmarket ‘chic’ feel. Its climate allows for Mediterranean vegetation and exotic plants, much of which can be seen on the three tiny Borromean islands, with their terraced gardens and aristocratic villas.
