Isle of Man Driving Experience

Isle of Man Driving Experience Overview

The Isle of Man is one of the UK’s hidden gems for steam travel and vintage transport. This tour will indulge your passion for old-fashioned transportation as you go behind the scenes of working railways and trams whilst touring this pretty island in style.

Day 1 – Welcome

Meet at our hotel in Douglas. Transport to the island is not included but we can book a convenient flight or ferry and rail tickets at additional cost. We have a welcome dinner at the hotel this evening.

Day 2 – Groudle Glen Railway

We ride the Manx Electric Railway to Groudle and take a walk through the Glen to reach the Groudle Glen Railway. Enjoy a guided workshop and shed tour, footplate rides and there will be plenty of photo opportunities including cliff top views over the site of the Victorian zoo. A sandwich lunch is included at Sea Lion Rocks cafe. A vintage bus will transfer us to Peel for a visit to the Manx Transport Heritage Museum. We continue to Ramsey along the closed North Line route, before following the last electric tram of the day along the line.

Day 3 – Ultimate Driving Experience

Following a briefing by railway personnel we embark on a full day’s driving experience in our chartered tram on the Manx Electric Railway. We will make three round trips between Laxey and Ramsey, giving everybody the opportunity to drive a tram (see restrictions). Lunch will be provided at Laxey.

Day 4 – Isle of Man Steam Railway

Today we visit the Steam Shed, Signal Box and workshops before taking the Isle of Man Steam Railway from Douglas to Castletown, with limited opportunities for footplate rides on the locomotive. There will be time to explore Castletown before an afternoon visit to Cregneash, the first open air folk museum in the British Isles. We also visit the Sound to watch the seals before returning to Douglas by bus.

Day 5 – At Leisure

A free day to explore the Island independently. Your Go Explore ticket will be valid on the extensive bus network linking the island’s attractions such as the Manx Museum, where you can learn about Viking treasure finds, natural wonders of the world, the famous TT Races and wartime internment. The ticket is also valid on all other state owned transportation, and gives entrance to all Manx National Heritage sites.

Day 6 – Snaefell Mountain Railway

We take a horse tram to Derby Castle to catch an electric tram to Laxey.  We travel on the Snaefell Mountain Railway and take lunch at the summit and there will be time to explore the Laxey Wheel and the charming town of Laxey before returning to Douglas. This evening we return to the Steam Railway for a full round trip while a “Pie and Mash” dinner is served on board.

Day 7 – Horse Trams

A visit to the Horse Tram Stables this morning to learn all about the working horses that were relied upon so heavily in the past and still operate today. The Clydesdale and Shire Horses will be happy to see us. We then make a full round trip on a double decker horse tram.

Day 8 – Goodbye

After breakfast we say our goodbyes and travel home. Travel from Douglas is independent.

To be eligible to drive on the Ultimate Driving Experience on Day 3 and footplate rides on the Isle of Man Steam Railway, you must be aged between 21 and 75 years and have no disabilities which could hinder the operation of tram controls including uncorrected eyesight/hearing impairments.
