An Ionian Odyssey Walk

An Ionian Odyssey Walk

An Ionian Odyssey Walk Overview

The heady scent of aromatic wild herbs, romantic ruins hidden in olive groves, and views across green slopes and the glittering aquamarine sea all make the walking here on these Ionian Islands a wonderful experience.

  • self-guided, two-centre walk
  • walking routes combining history and coastal scenery
  • visit sites from Homer’s epic poems
  • stylish hotels

The heady scent of wild sage and mint, romantic ruins recalling an intriguing and multi-layered history, and views across green slopes and an azure sea all make walking on Cephalonia and Odysseus’ island of Ithaca a bewitching experience.

Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, while neighbouring Ithaca is much smaller. Both boast varied and dramatic scenery though Ithaca also possesses an air of mystery that is enhanced by its links to Ulysses/Odysseus. The walking routes you follow convey the variety and sense of history, revealing ancient sites, Venetian fortifications, picturesque fishing villages, inviting sandy beaches and places that evoke Homeric legend, all against a bright green backdrop. There is ample time to explore the places you pass, as well as to relax on the beach and over leisurely lunches accompanied by some of the best wines in Greece.
