I still remember my amazement when confronted with a fresco of Hades abducting Persephone in the tombs of the Macedonian Kings in Vergina. For here was a chariot that was depicted with modern perspective, a technique that wouldn’t take off in Western Art until it was ‘invented’ by Italian masters in the Renaissance. Greece has a knack of constantly surprising you with the unexpected.
