This trip is an exciting journey along parts of the newly developed Transcaucasian trail, which links the Greater and Lesser Caucasian Mountains. One section of the trail, which is renowned for its amazing scenery, is the Upper Svaneti region.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, this region is famed for wild, snow-capped peaks and alpine valleys which, during the summer are covered with a dusting of wild flowers. Due to its remote location, Upper Svaneti has managed to preserve its unique and eye-catching architecture including carefully preserved watchtowers which dominate each farmhouse, hamlet and village. These still exist because the independent, and at one time fierce, inhabitants were never ruled by a feudal overlord. Each clan or family relied on the towers to defend themselves from outside invaders, and of course sometimes from their neighbours.
