Holidays to Ethiopia

Ethiopia has extraordinary vibrant cultures, rich history and dramatic landscapes. Taste its history wandering the giant stelae fields of Axum, the medieval rock-hewn churches of Lalibela or the 14th century monasteries on Lake Tana’s islands. For culture, visit the Omo Valley and its fascinating ancient tribes – the Karo, Hamer and Ari. Discover the dramatic lunar-like Danakil Depression, the cauldron of deep ravines and towering pinnacles of the Simien Mountains, and little-visited Bale Mountains National Park for the rare Ethiopian wolf.

Only around 400 wolves survive, yet they’re surprisingly easy to spot. We’d not long arrived on the Sanetti Plateau in Bale when we saw a wolf in the distance. While looking through binoculars, another wolf approached our jeep and quietly watched us. Had I not spotted him in our wing mirror, we would never have known he was there. He stayed for several minutes; a perfect model for some beautiful photographs.

Ethiopia is a plateau, riven by deep gorges, and its isolation has ensured that its people and culture are quite distinct from the rest of Africa. For thousands of years this has been reflected in its history. This is a poor country periodically devastated by famine, but beautifully green and fertile for the most part and constantly modernising.
