ITINERARY

Day 1 – Fly to Helsinki

Late morning flight from London to Helsinki, followed by a private transfer to our hotel.

Day 2 – Suomenlinna Maritime Museum

We take a waterbus over to Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress, one of the biggest sea fortresses in the world and now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 18th Century on a small group of islands, this fortress has a rich history and we get the opportunity to explore it all on foot. We then travel onwards by rail to Turku, our home for the next 2 nights.

Day 3 – Jokioinen Museum Railway

Jokioinen Museum Railway is the only remaining continuously operated narrow gauge railway in Finland and preserves the tradition of the Jokioinen Railway, built in 1898. We ride the train from Humpilla to Minkiö and enjoy a guided tour of the locomotive sheds and workshop. Lunch is included before we make our return journey to Humpilla and then Turku.

Day 4 – Onwards to Stockholm

Sit back and enjoy the view as we take one of the most scenic ferry journeys in the world through the Finnish and Swedish archipelagos between Turku and Stockholm.

Day 5 – Stockholm Steamboat Cruise

After a leisurely morning, we board the S/S Storskär for a lunchtime circular cruise of the archipelago to Rindö, stopping at Vaxholm on both the outbound and inbound journeys. Lunch is available to purchase on board from the cafeteria or in the restaurant (reservation recommended). We dock mid-afternoon and have the rest of the day to relax or ride the tram system.

Day 6 – Lennakatten Railway

By train to Uppsala to join Sweden’s foremost heritage railway, the ‘Lennakatten’. We experience the full journey steam hauled from Uppsala to Faringe and return, skirting lakes and through rural villages.

Day 7 – Östra Södermanlands Järnväg Mariefred Tour

From Stockholm we begin with the fast train on the Sveland line to Läggesta before boarding the steam train to Mariefred. There is time here to look around before we set sail on S/S Mariefred back to Stockholm.

Day 8 – Copenhagen

This morning we say goodbye to Stockholm and make our way to Copenhagen where we have a free afternoon to explore.

Day 9 – At Leisure in Copenhagen

A free day to relax and take in the wonderful atmosphere of this capital city. With an abundance of things to see and do here, you are sure to find something of interest. Of course no visit to Copenhagen is complete without a visit to see The Little Mermaid at Langelinje Pier.

Day 10 – Bandholm Museumbanen

We leave wonderful Copenhagen this morning and head to Maribo where we visit Bandholm Museumbanen on the island of Falster in southern Denmark. Journey on the 9km line from Maribo to Bandholm where there is time to sample a traditional Danish lunch at the Bandholm Hotel before making the return journey back to Maribo and our hotel for the night.

Day 11 – To Stralsund

Today we travel by rail to Stralsund via the Storebælt Link, an 18km-long suspension bridge that links east and west Denmark and has a railway tunnel.

Day 12 – Steam on the Molli

A short journey via Rostock brings us to Bad Doberan, home of the steam railway affectionately known as the Molli. The line runs to the coastal resort of Kühlungsborn and famously runs through the streets of Bad Doberan just inches from pavement restaurants! The afternoon is free to explore Bad Doberan, Rostock, and return to Stralsund at your leisure.

Day 13 – The Island of Rugen

The Baltic Sea is a popular seaside resort for German people and the Isle of Rügen is a particular favourite destination. Its narrow gauge railway and steam trains are an important tourist attraction. We ride the line for its entire length before returning to Stralsund.

Day 14 – Berlin

By rail to Berlin, arriving early afternoon. A local city transport pass is included here and you have all afternoon to explore Germany’s capital city!

Day 15 – Homeward Bound

Free time this morning for relaxation or perhaps some last minute sightseeing or souvenir hunting before making our way to the airport for our late afternoon flight home.
