Combining style and charm, Copenhagen is perfect for a Christmas market break. Things start to liven up as early as the beginning of November, when Christmas beer begins to pour from the taps in the city’s bars. From mid-November onwards, the cobbled streets of gaily painted, gabled houses are festooned with lights, and the Christmas spirit really begins to flow through December, the inviting scent of gløgg (mulled wine) and toasted almonds pervading the air. Staying in a high-quality waterfront hotel in the historic Nyhavn harbour district, you are well placed to visit the Christmas market in the much-loved Tivoli fairground – where the thousands of lights add to the charm, particularly after dusk – and to browse the shops along Strøget, as well as to discover the city’s palaces, churches, museums and restaurants, several of which have earned Michelin stars.
