Istria & the Kvarner Gulf

Istria & the Kvarner Gulf Overview

Featuring an atmospheric hill-top town, a sleepy island and a Belle Epoque resort, this holiday by car and ferry showcases the best of northern Croatia.

  • self-guided journey by car and boat
  • see three different ‘faces’ of northern Croatia
  • fabulous seascapes and wildlife-rich islands
  • historic inland towns and villages
  • hire car included

In the north of Croatia, the mountainous Istrian Peninsula sticks out into the Adriatic Sea, creating a horseshoe-shaped bay on its eastern side, the Kvarner Gulf. And although Istria may feel more than a little Italian through its more well-known neighbour's influence on food, language and architecture, the Kvarner Gulf is quintessentially Croatian, encompassing idyllic pebble coves, brilliant blue seas, small fishing villages and a plenty of beautiful islands.

This relaxing journey by car and ferry starts in Motovun, a fortified hill-top town in the centre of the Peninsula, from where, you travel eastwards, crossing the island of Cres to reach its smaller neighbour, Losinj. After two days exploring this rural island, you return to the mainland to end in Lovran, whose pleasant promenade and elegant villas evoke the Belle Epoque - a perfect place to round off your discovery of the best of Istria and the Kvarner Gulf.
