Peru & Bolivia

Taking in two South American countries, Peru offers incredible scenery from the Inca capital of Machu Picchu to the impressive Lake Titicaca. We will travel on one of the highest rail journeys in the world to Huancayo before making our way to Bolivia, home of the Salt Flats. A wonderful tour that explores the culture and beauty of these countries.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Fly to Lima

Fly to Lima via Miami and transfer to our hotel in the Miraflores district.

Day 2 – Lima – City of Kings

Today we take a half day tour starting in Miraflores to enjoy the views of the bay and the Pacific Ocean. We will visit the pre-Hispanic site of Pucllana and Huallamarca before heading to Downtown Lima to visit the Convent of San Francisco and view its priceless pieces of art and Catacombs.

Day 3 – Train to Huancayo

An early morning start as we take an amazing train journey to Huancayo. Time to relax and take in the breathtaking scenery as we pass through 69 tunnels, cross 58 bridges and 6 switchbacks. We pass through the Galera Tunnel, the second highest railway point in the world.

Day 4 – Train to Huancavelica

We board the ‘Tren Macho’ and again journey through stunning scenery as we travel through the Andes along the Mantaro River to Huancavelica.

Day 5 – Private Bus to Pisco

A relaxing bus journey across a breathtaking landscape that includes snow-capped mountains and lagoons while passing through typical Andean Towns.

Day 6 – The Ballestas Islands

We take a boat over to the Ballestas Islands and during the journey we have an opportunity to appreciate the Candelabro (candlestick) which is thought to have an association with the Nazca Lines. On arrival there is a chance to view the island’s wildlife which includes Humboldt Penguins, Sea Lions and Pelicans.

Day 7 – Flight Over the Nazca Lines

We take a flight over the famous Nazca Lines which are best appreciated by air. They are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and still keep the mystery of why they were created by the ancient Nazca people.

Day 8 – Flight to Cusco

A morning flight to Cusco and transfer to our hotel. This afternoon is free for you to relax.

Day 9 – Former Capital of the Inca Empire

A morning tour of the San Blas neighbourhood where we visit Maximo Laura Museum before walking across to Hatun Rumiyoq to view the famous 12 Angled Inca Stone. We also visit the Cathedral and complete our tour with a visit to Korincancha, the Incas Temple of the Sun.

Day 10 – The Sacred Valley & Train to Aguas Calientes

We visit the famous Pisac Market and get a taste of local life followed by a visit to Ollantaytambo, the impressive archaeological fortress which contains some superb Inca stonework and terracing. We take the afternoon train to Aguas Calientes and transfer to our hotel.

Day 11 – Machu Picchu

An early start as we witness the spectacular sight of Machu Picchu. After our visit we return to Cusco by train.

Day 12 – Titicaca Train to Puno

Enjoy the spectacular journey on board the Titicaca Train to Puno across the high Altiplano. The train has an observation carriage providing excellent views over the Andean wilderness. Lunch will be served on board.

Day 13 – Lake Titicaca

We board our vessel at Lake Titicaca Harbour and visit the astonishing floating islands of the Uros. We continue to Taquile Island before heading back to Puno.

Day 14 – Copacabana and La Paz

Transfer by road to Copacabana Sanctuary and board the catamaran cruise to Sun Island, the legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire. We continue by road to La Paz.

Day 15 – La Paz – Oruro and Train to Uyuni

Journey by bus to Oruro where we will have time for lunch before boarding our train to Uyuni arriving at our destination late evening.

Day 16 – The Cemetery of Trains

After breakfast we head towards the old mine of Pulacayo, which houses a collection of old locos. We return to Uyuni and visit the Train Cemetery where we find the remains of old rail equipment left to rust in this salt desert.

Day 17 – Tour of Salar de Uyuni

Taking the unpaved road we travel in 4x4 vehicles to Colchani located on the edge of the salt lake. We continue with a visit to Incahuasi Island with its amazing huge cacti. We head back across the lake to the truly unique Luna Salada Hotel.

Day 18 – Flight to La Paz

We take a flight back to La Paz and have an afternoon visit to the epic city of Tiwanaku where the pre-Inca ruins date back to 1580 B.C. We also visit the train museum at Guaqui.

Day 19 – La Paz

This morning is at leisure before we take an afternoon tour including the Witches Market and Murillo Square. We continue with a visit to the spectacular Valley of the Moon before returning to our hotel for a farewell dinner.

Days 20 & 21 – Bolivia to London

An early departure from La Paz back to London via Miami arriving the next day.
