Visitors have long been drawn to Lake Achensee, whose glittering waters reflect the imposing Karwendel Mountains which shelter it. On its western shores lies the pleasant, typically Tyrolean village of Pertisau, which in turn guards the entrance to two valleys leading deeper into the mountains. This is perfect walking country, where inviting paths lead around the lake, through the valleys and along panoramic ridges in the mountains high above.
Lake Achensee is one of those places where it is tempting simply to admire the grandeur of the surrounding mountains and soak up the restful atmosphere – it can certainly be difficult to tear yourself away from the 4-star Hotel Wiesenhof with its state-of-the-art spa and excellent restaurant, where, in addition to a generous breakfast and delicious dinner, a light lunch and an afternoon snack buffet are included every day. To not venture further afield, however, would be to miss out on some fantastic walking. There are paths both close to the water and in the mountains above, thus giving you different perspectives of this Tyrolean jewel. For a change, local guide Christoph Leithner can arrange mountain-bike hire or an introduction to Nordic walking (pay locally), or you can take the bus and train to Innsbruck, a fairy-tale city blending Gothic and Baroque architecture and boasting a delightful Old Town and fascinating sights such as the Imperial Palace and Golden Roof.
